Including donations, we have received about $1500. We need $500 more in order to go to Westminster Woods. We are so close…let’s finish it up with our next Dine and Donate at Mary’s Pizza!
Mary’s Pizza Dine and Donate: Wednesday, February 21st Mary’s will donate 15% of the purchases to our 5th graders. Flyers come home on Wednesday!
Reading
This month’s book project is a memoir or biography. Some kids have found books that are 100 pages in length, if this is the case then read two books to get near the page requirement. Pictures in the book are allowed. Book choices are due tomorrow.
Students are wrapping up their amazing argumentative research papers this week. They have been very excited to write about topics that matter to them! Take some time this week to check their reasons for or against cell phones in school, no/less homework, pets in school, and longer recess. Final essays are due this Thursday!
Meanwhile, we’ve already started our next writing unit on short fantasy stories. These fantastical stories with a message will be published into a hardback class book. Parents will have the opportunity to purchase these books. Please look for the order forms by next week. All order forms need to be returned even if you are not ordering a book. Check “NO” if you do not want a book.
Math
On Thursday, we will be taking our chapter four test. I am so excited to report that this has been by far the easiest chapter for the whole class. It was so nice to breeze through the chapter. Chapter 5 will not be as easy. We will go back to looking at fractions and multiplying them. Remember all of those ways that we learned to multiply, well, we will be applying them to fractions. We will get through it!
Online Everyday Math website access. In December, I sent home the sign-in info to students for our new online curriculum. Students have access to the homework, lessons, and games. If your child misplaces the Home-Link, he/she may print it out from the website. Now, students have an easier way of logging onto the McGraw Hill website.
History
Google Classroom has been a big part of how we're looking at history. Ms. Molina has created documents that link them to articles they have been reading and responding about. Feel free to ask your child to show you what they're doing in class.
Colony Diorama Project
This month we have introduced a Colony Diorama project. Please see the attached document for the assignment instructions and website links. The Diorama can be done with a partner, and they may research with a partner, but the essay must be done individually. They may use books as sources or the approved sites that are provided on the assignment sheet. Below are important due dates.
Salt Dough Map
--Tomorrow we will be building the salt dough maps. If you would like to come in and help, we will take any volunteers. Remind your child to wear clothes that can get messy.
--Next Wednesday, we will work on painting the salt dough maps. This is another day that we can use volunteers.
Grades
Go to Illuminate Ed to view your child’s grades. Final grades for trimester 2 will be submitted by Friday, March 2nd. Report cards will go out shortly afterwards. For account sign-up directions, please refer to the email sent to parents at the beginning of the year through illuminate ed.

Valentine’s Day
This year we will be taking a field trip on Valentine’s day to the Planetarium. We will hear our speaker tell us stories about the stars. This means that we will not be having a Valentine’s celebration. If your child still wishes to pass out valentines, I will allow them to do this during the last 10 minutes of the day outside. Please do not send in treats.
Book Fair
This exciting yearly Scholastic book fair will take place during the week of February 26th. For more information, read the SACO emails.
